HISTORY


Nova Hotels is a locally owned and operated Family Business. Nova’s Founder, Mike Mrdjenovich, started his business, Nova Construction, in Yellowknife in 1970 and worked as a developer building condos, apartments and office buildings. In 2000, he came across a great opportunity to build a hotel in a market that needed rooms and he built his first hotel, the Chateau Nova Yellowknife, which was sold many years later.
From that day forward, Mr. Mrdjenovich fell in love with hospitality and continued to build, buy, renovate, sell and operate hotels. He created the hotel chain and management company, Nova Hotels, all the while still building his other projects as a developer. Mr. Mrdjenovich eventually moved his headquarters for his development company and hotel chain closer to his family in Edmonton and it has been operating there ever since.
In 2007, Nova built 8 hotels, establishing its’ credibility as one of the top and largest independent hotel chains in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Northwest Territories.
2007 is also when Aleksa Mrdjenovich, daughter of Mike, joined Nova Hotels. She worked her way through the company and quickly grew to become the President, and then CEO of Nova Hotels.
In 2016, Nova Hotels came full circle and returned to its’ roots by opening the brand new, Full Service Hotel and brought the Chateau Nova Brand back to the Yellowknife market.
In order to keep expanding at the rapid pace that Nova has traditionally shown, Mike still consults on the development side as Aleksa currently runs Nova Hotels with the rest of her Corporate Offices. Nova Hotels has built, bought, sold and acquired over 27 hotels since 2000 and currently owns and operates 14 hotels and 20 restaurants and lounges throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories.
